When you need new games for kids in your repertoire, 9 Square in the Air has you covered! These Minute-to-Win-it challenges will keep kids jumping, laughing and, best of all, connecting. Use these suggestions as a springboard to come up with more variations or simply follow this guide for some fun games all featuring 9 Square in the Air.
One-Hand Wonder: In this challenge, kids have one hand behind their back. If they get caught using both hands, they get called out by the referee. You may want to consider putting a wristband on the non-playing hand so that when you see a colored band in the air, you know someone has violated the rules! For added, difficulty, have kids use their non-dominant hand to play. See who can last the longest in this game within a minute.
Battle it Out Blindfolded: Divide the players into teams and hand out two different colors of blindfolds for the teams. Designate one player on each team as the caller; they are the only one not wearing a blindfold and can shout to players when the ball is coming their way. Set the timer for a minute and see which team has the fewest players out.
Dizzy Minute: This is one of those games for kids that may end in a few tumbles. Set a timer for one minute and instruct the players to spin…and spin. They will continue trying to hit the ball as they keep rotating. When the minute is up, be ready to catch falling kids! If any kids are still standing, you have your winners.
The Right Call: Rather than just hit the ball, the player must call out whose square the ball will land in. If they miss, they’re out. This game may not even make it to a minute, but you’ll have fun trying.
Cold Square in the Air: Designate a player who calls “freeze” at intervals during the game. Every player must freeze, causing the ball to land wherever it is headed. Whoever hit the ball is out, plus any players that move. See how many players can stay in the game a full minute.
Silent Square: When things get too rowdy, it’s time for Silent Square. Players must be completely silent, not even uttering an “oh” when the ball comes their way unexpectedly. Have a player designated to catch offenders and see if your players can make it the full minute. There’s a pretty good chance they won’t be able to play without laughing but give it a try.
One Leg Challenge: Have the kids tap into their inner flamingo, playing on one foot for a minute. If you have younger kids, allow them to switch feet, but never camp out on both feet, during the game. This is a great test of coordination and provides lots of laughs as kids try to spend a whole minute on one foot to win.
