How to Use 9 Square in the Air to Meet Your Inclusivity Objectives

As a PE teacher, you’re tasked with creating an environment that is inclusive for all.

But it can be a real challenge with so many variables in each class!

With a 9 Square in the Air Deluxe Game, you have a go-to solution for meeting some of the inclusivity objectives on your list. Here’s how it’s done!

Adjust the Height: 9 Square in the Air is height adjustable, so it can be usable for kids of all ages and abilities. Whether some of your students are in wheelchairs or if they are new to the game and might need a little help getting started, lowering the height can be helpful.

Change Up the Ball: Your Deluxe Game comes with a ball, but the game can be played completely differently by using a softer ball. Try a foam, or beach ball, or even a balloon to allow the game to move at a slower pace. This works great if you have children with sensory challenges, or motor skills differences, or if they are younger children.

Simplify Instructions: 9 Square in the Air game play is easy to learn, but it can be even easier. Try instructing kids to simply “Hit the ball,” or “See if you can send the ball to another person.”

Instead of announcing that a child is out, it may be helpful to say that it’s time for other friends to have a turn and allow some kids to switch out in the game.

Provide Encouragement Props: If it’s hard for kids to wait a turn to get in on the fun, consider having some items nearby that they can use to cheer on their friends: pom poms, streamers or ribbons, pinwheels, and other cheerful props might be an exciting addition.

Play With Buddies: Some children might need a buddy to help them play 9 Square in the Air. Place two children in each square and consider having one buddy catch the ball while the other gets to throw it back up.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started using 9 Square in the Air so that everyone can be included. At 9 Square in the Air, we’re always excited to hear how people are using the game to help kids get active, learn, and grow!

If you have had a successful experience using the game to promote inclusivity, we’d love to hear from you! And to order your Deluxe Game for your PE class, contact us at 9 Square in the Air!
